Q: How does flame retardant clothing help protect against burn injury?
A: If exposed to electric arc flashes or flash fires, clothing made from most untreated (e.g., non-FR) fibers will continue to burn once ignited. In contrast, FR clothing is specially designed to self-extinguish within two seconds after the source of ignition is removed - thereby limiting the worker's degree of burns, and body burn percentage. FR fabrics are not flame proof; however, they are specially designed to be flame-retardant.
Q: Can the flame retardant chemicals be washed out?
A: Flame retardant fabric is guaranteed to be flame-retardant for the useful life of the garment; regardless of the number of washings (servicings) in either the home or industrial laundering, provided the garment care instructions are followed.
Q: Who should wear Flame Resistant (FR) clothing?
A: People who work in hazardous environments that may involve the following hazards: Electric Arc (electricians, electric utility lineman, etc.), Flash Fire (refinery, chemical and pharmaceutical workers, etc.) Combustible Dust Explosion (workers in the paper and pulp industry, food processing, paint, and many more industries). Plus, ANY workers who come in contact with energized electrical equipment.
